                                       THE NEWSPAPER OF ANNA FRANK

Anne Frank was one of hundreds of thousands of visually handicapped children Jews who perished in the Holocaust. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany in 1929, and fled with his family to Holland after the seizure of power by the Nazis in 1933.

The Germans occupied Amsterdam in May 1940. In July 1942, when Germany began the deportation of Dutch Jews to the death camps of Auschwitz-Birkenau and Sobibor in occupied Poland, Anne and her family hid with four other people, all Jewish. For two years, they lived in a secret attic behind a business office at Prinsengracht No. 263. Family friends smuggled food and clothing for them, at great risk to their own lives. On August 4, 1944, the Gestapo (secret state police of the Nazis), who had received the information from the neighboring Dutch, discovered the hiding place of the Frank family.

The Franks were arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the Westerbork transit camp. From there, in September 1944, the Nazis deported the Frank and the other four arrested, to Auschwitz-Birkenau. In December 1944, Anne and her sister Margot were transferred to the concentration camp of Bergen-Belsencerca of Celle in northern Germany. Died of typhus in March 1945, a month before the camp's liberation. Anne's mother was killed in Auschwitz. Only Anne's father, Otto, survived the war. Soviet forces liberated Otto at Auschwitz in January 1945.

While in hiding, Anne kept a diary in which scoring their fears, hopes, and experiences. Found in the secret attic after the family was arrested, the diary was kept for Anne by one of the people who helped hide the Frank. It was published after the war in several languages. Anne Frank has become a symbol for the lost promise with the children who died inthe Holocaust.
